Every founder and leadership team knows the feeling: hours spent in a strategy session, sticky notes everywhere, bold goals written on slides only to find months later, that very little has changed. Why does this happen so often?

The Problem Isn’t Lack of Strategy. It’s Lack of Alignment.
Strategic planning often falls into the trap of being too theoretical, too isolated, or too rigid. Teams walk away with documents, not direction. The issue isn’t the absence of ideas, but the failure to translate strategy into how people operate, decide, and prioritize every day.
Common problems teams face:
Strategic goals exist, but teams can’t connect their work to them
Execution is driven by urgency, not importance
Feedback loops are slow or missing entirely
What to Do Instead: Focus on Strategy Alignment
Strategy alignment is the bridge between vision and execution. It ensures that the work your teams do daily actually moves the business in the direction you’ve set.
That means:
Breaking down big goals into team-level initiatives
Clarifying ownership and decision rights
Embedding priorities into budgeting, hiring, and planning
Reviewing performance in ways that connect back to strategy
When alignment is missing, even the best plans stall. When alignment is strong, mediocre plans can outperform.
How to Start
Start by asking:
Do we have 3-5 clear strategic objectives?
Can each team trace their top priorities to those objectives?
Are our systems (planning, reviews, incentives) reinforcing the strategy?
If the answer is fuzzy, it’s time to build alignment. This isn’t a one-time fix. It’s a way of working.
