Vision to Velocity: Turn Strategy Into 3–5 Company Objectives That Actually Drive Execution

When vision sits above execution with nothing in between, each function fills the void with its own logic.
Product chases requests.
Sales pursues quick wins.
Operations plugs gaps.
Activity rises, compounding falls.
The missing link is a small set of company objectives that translate vision into what must happen this year.

The Tool: Vision and Strategic Objectives Map
A one-page bridge between where you’re going and what you will achieve in the next 12–18 months.
List three to five company-level objectives.Under each, list the few initiatives that drive it.
The format is simple.The effect is alignment.
How It Plays Out in the Field
A growing team had too many “priorities,” constant roadmap churn, and unclear signals of progress.
We created a map with three objectives:
• Focus growth in the core segment.
• Shorten onboarding time meaningfully.
• Ship one enterprise-grade capability that opens a new market.
Within one quarter, hiring, roadmaps, and investor updates aligned to those commitments. Meetings shifted from status to alignment. Workload felt lighter because decisions became simpler.
Why This Isn’t Just “OKRs”
OKRs often live at the team level — they’re execution tools.The Objectives Map lives above OKRs. It sets direction so team OKRs connect instead of becoming a forest of isolated goals.
How to Build Yours
Write your vision in one or two sentences. Keep it plain.
Draft 3–5 company objectives for the next 12–18 months. They should be specific enough to measure and broad enough to drive cross-functional work.
Under each objective, list the few initiatives that will move it. Keep it light.
Give each objective one lead indicator and one lag indicator — teams need both signal and outcome, not vanity metrics.
Socialise with your leads. Remove overlap. Cut vague items. Share widely. Review quarterly.
How to Run It Operationally
Weekly decision cadence. Open leadership meetings with a 7-minute check against the map. If a topic doesn’t trace to an objective, park it or drop it.
Quarterly planning rhythm. Confirm the 3–5 objectives first, then pull initiatives that ladder up.
Cross-functional alignment. Tie hiring, budgets, and roadmap changes to the objective they enable. If no objective, no spend.
Reporting. Start board or investor updates with the 3–5 objectives. Then show progress by objective and the next decisions.
A Quick Test
If you could only achieve three outcomes this year, which ones would truly move the business?
Ask your leadership team the same question — separately.
If the answers match, you have alignment.
If not, you have work to do.
Finish With Action
You don’t need an off-site.
Block 90 minutes with your leads.
Draft the map.
Turn it into the header slide on every roadmap.
Open weekly with it.
Link every major decision back to it.
Clarity compounds.
