Critical Path Analysis

Critical Path Analysis (CPA) is a project management technique that identifies the longest sequence of dependent tasks necessary to complete a project, determining the shortest possible duration to complete the project. This technique helps prioritize tasks by focusing on those that must be completed on time to avoid delaying the entire project.

Best suited for large and complex projects where timing and task dependencies are crucial to successful project delivery. Particularly useful in construction, software development, and any project involving sequential task dependencies.

IMPLEMENTATION

  1. List All Tasks: Identify all tasks required to complete the project.

  2. Determine Dependencies: Map out dependencies among tasks to understand which tasks must precede others.

  3. Estimate Duration: Assign an estimated duration to each task.

  4. Construct a Network Diagram: Create a diagram that visually maps out the sequence of tasks and their dependencies.

  5. Identify the Critical Path: Calculate the longest path of dependent tasks through the network diagram. This path determines the project’s minimum duration.
